Manually configuring RJE readers

When you define a connection in the RJE Configuration Utility, you have the option of having the necessary RJE readers automatically created for you. If the readers are not automatically created for you, you can manually add them using the RJE Configuration Utility and the Windows Add Printer Wizard. In addition, you can also modify and remove a reader. The following procedures provide step-by-step instructions for adding, modifying, or removing a reader.

Adding a reader

To add a Windows printer, you must be a member of either the Administrators, Printer Operators, or Server Operators group, or you must be a Power User on a workstation.

Complete the following procedures, using the RJE Configuration Utility and the Windows Add Printer Wizard.

To add the Barr port

  1. If you haven't done so already, use the RJE Configuration Utility to define a connection.

  2. Open the Add Printer Wizard.

  3. The welcome page displays, click Next.

  4. Select Local printer to define a local printer and click Next.

  5. Select Create a new port.

  6. From the Type list, select the Barr RJE port.

  7. Click Next. The Add Port dialog box displays.

  8. Type the Port name, and then click OK.

Include the connection name in the port name so you can easily identify the ports later. We recommend you name the port Connection name - Send to Host (for example, Test - Send to Host).

To configure the Barr RJE port

After selecting the Barr RJE port, the RJE Port Configuration dialog box displays showing the local computer and the first connection defined. If connections have not been defined on the selected computer, the RJE connection box will display the following message: No connections defined. If local or remote connections have not been defined, you cannot configure the port.

Click Modify to select a new connection from the Select Connection dialog box. When you finish configuring the port, click OK to return to the Add Printer Wizard.

 

To add a spool printer

Spool printers route jobs from BHCS to a physical destination. You need to define spool printers that send jobs to the host and associate them with the Windows printers you created for sending jobs to the host. The options you specify for a spool printer affect all documents you send to it.

You must define a unique spool printer for each RJE reader. These spool printers can use the same Windows printer.

Complete the following steps to define a spool printer that sends jobs to the host.

  1. From the Configuration Utility's Spool Printers tab, click Add. The Printer Properties dialog box displays.

  2. In the Name box, enter a printer name. This name displays in the Spool Windows printer list and is called the spool printer. The printer name cannot contain a backslash '\'.

  1. Under Physical printer, select Existing.

  2. From the list of defined Windows printers, select the printer that was just created with the Barr Jobs to Mainframe printer driver. The selected Windows printer is the physical device the spool documents will be routed to.

  3. Under Options, click Advanced. The Advanced Printer Options dialog box displays. Review the following table to select the desired options.

  1. Click OK three times to exit the Configuration Utility.

Modifying a reader

If it is necessary to change the properties of a reader, you will need to modify the properties of both the spool printer and the Windows printer. You will modify the spool printer using the Configuration Utility and the Windows printer in the Windows Printers folder. Complete the following procedures to modify the properties of a reader.

To modify a spool printer

Complete the following steps to view or modify a spool printer's properties.

  1. Open the printer configuration using one of the following methods.

  2. Right-click the printer in the Spool Window and select Configure. To access this option, the printer must be disabled and you must have the Configure - Printer and Disk Settings user access right.

  3. Open the Configuration Utility. From the Spool Printers tab, select the spool printer, and then click Modify.

To modify a Windows printer

Complete the following steps to view or modify a Windows printer's properties.

  1. Open the Windows Printers folder.

  2. Right-click the printer and select Properties.

  3. The Properties dialog box displays.

  4. Modify the printer settings as needed.

Removing a reader

If it is necessary to remove a reader, you will need to remove both the spool printer and the Windows printer. If you are a member of the Administrators group, you can remove the physical printer as well as the spool printer from the Configuration Utility. If you are not a member of the Administrators group, only the spool printer will be removed.

Complete the following procedure to remove a reader.

  1. Open the Configuration Utility.

  2. From the Spool Printers tab, select a printer, and then click Remove.

  3. A dialog box displays confirming the deletion. From this dialog you can also select to delete the physical printer associated with the spool printer. Click Yes to delete both the spool printer and the associated physical printer. Click No to only delete the spool printer. Click Cancel to cancel the deletion.

Before you delete printers, all printers in the Spool Window must be Disabled.
