Windows XP and Server 2003 users

Barr Enterprise Print Server

Barr Enterprise Print Server supports Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 in addition to Windows 2000. Because of the differences in the operating systems, some procedures will vary. When completing a procedure, follow the steps appropriate for your operating system.

The following are some of the areas that are affected by the differences. See the "What's new in Windows XP" topic in the Windows XP Microsoft Help for additional information. For Windows Server 2003, follow the steps for Windows XP. The common questions topic provides helpful troubleshooting information for using the Barr Enterprise Printer Server on Windows Server 2003.

Upgrading from Windows NT or Windows 2000

If you have a current version of the Barr Enterprise Print Server software on your computer and you are upgrading from Windows NT or Windows 2000 to Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, complete the following steps after you have installed the new operating system. For additional information, see your Barr Enterprise Print Server manual.

  1. Remove the Barr software.

Your current Barr configuration files will remain intact. Use the Backup Configuration Utility to back up any specific configuration files.

  1. Install the Barr software, version 3.2 or later for Windows XP or version 4.0 or later for Windows Server 2003.

  1. Open the devices utility.

  2. Click the plus sign (+) next to Unknown Devices to expand the list.

  3. Right-click the device named Unknown PCI Device, and select Uninstall. Complete this step for each unknown PCI device listed.

  1. On the Device Manager menu bar, select Action | Scan for hardware changes. Windows will install the adapters using the correct drivers. See your Windows Help for additional information.

Managing printers

The procedures for adding and editing a printer and its properties have changed slightly in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. When adding printers or ports, setting printer properties, or selecting printer drivers, there will be specific instructions for Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP/2003 users. Follow the instructions for your operating system. For more information, see the Getting started with printers Help topic.

Services

In Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, the Services utility is located in Administrative Tools. The procedure for opening the Services utility has changed in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. In addition, other procedures, such as starting and stopping services, have also changed. When procedures are different depending on the version of Windows, specific instructions will be shown. For more information, see the Managing Services topic.

Windows utilities

In Windows XP  and Windows Server 2003, the names and locations of Windows utilities have changed slightly. Depending on the utility, specific instructions for Windows XP will be listed. See the Opening Windows utilities topic for more information. When procedures for opening or using the utility are different depending on the version of Windows, specific instructions will be shown. For Windows Server 2003, follow the steps for Windows XP.

BARR/CHANNEL products

The Configuration tab in BARR/CHANNEL-OUT is only available for Windows NT users. Users of other later Windows operating systems must use the Windows Device Manager to configure device drivers. In Device Manager, click the plus sign (+) next to Barr adapters, right-click the adapter, and select Properties.

Windows NT users should continue to use the BARR/CHANNEL-OUT Configuration tab to configure device drivers.
