Locating log files for normalizing or transforming Xerox data

Two different log files contain information relating to the processing of Xerox data, the Operator Console log file and the transform log file. The transform log file is generated when Xerox jobs are normalized, viewed, or transformed using either the BARR/TOOLS or the BARR/TRANSFORM product options.

The transform log file is a text file, usually named dsdata0.log, and is located in the spool folder of the specific job it relates to. To locate the spool folder for a specific job, you can determine the folder name by adding the BARR_FOLDER column to your spool window. This folder name, which is in the form of {20031211-1159330902-0000-4ACB52FA}, will be found in the path designated for the Barr spooler directory, usually C:\Program Files\Barr\Spooler\Spool\.

Determining which resources are missing from a Xerox job

Both the BARR/TOOLS and BARR/TRANSFORM product options require that you copy all the necessary resources (JSLs, fonts, forms, images) from the Xerox printer to a designated folder on the computer running the Barr software. To see whether you have all of the resources for a particular job, the easiest way is to bring the job into the Barr spooler, view the job with the Xerox LCDS/Metacode viewer, and then check the log. Here are the steps broken down:

  1. Receive the job into Barr using any standard input, such as BARR/RJE, BARR/PRINT TCP/IP, or the Print Utility. It makes sense to use the one that you intend to use in production.

  2. Make sure that the form name on the job reflects the correct INI file in the transform folder.

  3. Right-click the job you want to view, and select View LCDS/Metacode. The Viewer displays.

  4. From the menu bar, select View | Log Output to display log information in the bottom of the window. Alternatively, you can find the dsdata0.log text file in the job folder of the Barr spooler directory.

The log will have error messages listing any resources that were called for in the job or in the JSL, but not found in the resource directory.
